Thailand’s Queen Suthida has taken her aviation career to new heights. On a clear day in southern Thailand, she climbed into the cockpit of a supersonic fighter jet and completed her very first solo flight in the high-performance aircraft. The milestone wasn’t just a personal triumph. It was also a highly public display of the royal family’s deep-rooted ties to the country’s armed forces.

A Royal Flight in Surat Thani

According to a release from the Thai Royal Household, the flight took place on October 8 at a military airfield in the southern province of Surat Thani. Watching from the ground was her husband, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who observed the entire operation as the Queen taxied, took off, and landed the jet.

The aircraft she piloted was a JAS 39 Gripen. These Swedish-built supersonic fighters are known for their speed, agility, and cutting-edge technology. Handling such a machine alone requires immense skill and focus. But Queen Suthida isn’t a beginner.

More Than a Thousand Hours in the Air

The palace was quick to emphasize her extensive experience. She has been flying since 2010, starting her training long before she assumed her current royal duties. Over the last fourteen years, the Queen has accumulated about 1,188 hours of flight time. Her experience spans multiple types of aircraft, ranging from basic trainers to complex transport planes and now, supersonic fighters.

Her journey into aviation actually predates her royal title. Before marrying the King in 2019, she worked as a flight attendant for Thailand’s national carrier, Thai Airways. After entering royal service, she transitioned into military training, rising through the ranks of the King’s Guard and dedicating herself to rigorous flight instruction.

Over the years, she has put those skills to practical use. The Royal Household noted that she has regularly co-piloted aircraft during official state visits. On these trips, she has helped fly the King and other delegates to various foreign destinations, demonstrating her hands-on role in the royal family’s official travels.

A Tradition of Military Aviation

The solo flight in Surat Thani was a highly choreographed event. Official footage showed the Queen dressed in full flight gear, including a specialized flight suit and helmet, as she conducted her pre-flight inspections. She then boarded the single-seat fighter, closed the canopy, and roared down the runway.

The King’s presence at the airfield was highly symbolic. King Maha Vajiralongkorn is an avid aviator himself, with decades of experience flying both military helicopters and commercial-grade Boeing jetliners. For years, the King has championed the importance of military readiness and physical discipline within the royal household.

Surat Thani, where the flight occurred, is home to the Royal Thai Air Force’s Wing 7, which operates the Gripen fleet. The province’s coastal airbase serves as a strategic hub for Thailand’s air defense.

By successfully commanding the fighter jet alone, Queen Suthida has solidified her status as a fully qualified military pilot. The flight serves as a reminder of the unique roles occupied by members of the Thai monarchy, who often balance traditional ceremonial duties with active, hands-on positions within the nation’s military structure.
