A tragic highway collision in western Turkey on Sunday morning has claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left 27 others injured. The accident, which involved a tour bus and a heavy tow truck, occurred on one of the country’s busiest transit routes in Manisa province. Local authorities reported that the crash took place near the Akhisar toll plazas along the Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir highway.
Emergency services were alerted to the pileup shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time, according to an official statement issued by the Manisa governor’s office. First responders arrived to find a scene of severe destruction.
A Scene of Utter Destruction
The impact was violent. It flipped both the passenger bus and the truck onto their sides. The rear portion of the bus took the brunt of the hit, leaving the vehicle’s frame warped and torn open. Nearby, the tow truck lay on its side, its cargo of heavy wooden planks strewn across the roadway. Rescue teams laid out blue tarpaulins and body bags along the shoulder of the highway as they recovered the deceased.
Paramedics rushed 27 survivors to nearby medical facilities. Among the injured was the bus driver himself. His injuries were not life-threatening, and local police detained him for questioning immediately after doctors cleared him for discharge from the hospital.

Immediate Arrest and Official Inquiry
The identities of those who died have not been fully released. Turkey’s Interior Minister, Mustafa Ciftci, used the social platform X to offer his condolences, referring to the casualties as citizens. However, local agencies have not clarified if any foreign tourists were on board the tour bus at the time.
Governor Vahdettin Ozkan of Manisa traveled to the site to oversee the recovery efforts. He spoke to reporters while clean-up crews worked to upright the overturned vehicles. He confirmed that the local public prosecutor’s office had taken charge of the investigation. Ozkan noted that the horrific scene served as a grim, painful reminder of the critical importance of road safety and strict adherence to traffic laws.
A Route Known for Heavy Traffic
This particular highway is a vital link. It connects Istanbul and the northern industrial zones to the Aegean coast, meaning it sees heavy commercial and tourist traffic year-round. Accidents on these high-speed stretches often lead to major disruptions, but the scale of Sunday’s tragedy has shocked local communities. Traffic was backed up for hours as crews worked to clear the massive debris field.
Local prosecutors have launched a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators are looking into several potential factors:
- Determining the speed of both vehicles at the time of impact.
- Investigating whether mechanical failure played a role.
- Assessing weather conditions and visibility near the Akhisar toll plazas.
- Analyzing driver fatigue and shift logs.
Further updates are expected as police complete their initial questioning of the detained bus driver and compile the preliminary forensic report from the crash site.
