PayPal Launches AI Video Gift Cards to Fight Holiday Scams

Buying a gift card from a grocery store rack has become a gamble. You pick a card, pay at the register, and hand it to a loved one. But when they go to use it, the balance is gone. Scammers have turned gift card draining into a massive, highly organized underground industry. It is a quiet crime that leaves shoppers empty-handed and retailers scrambling.

A Shield Against Card-Draining Scams

To fight back, PayPal is rolling out a new tool just in time for the 2026 holiday shopping rush. The company is launching AI-powered personalized video gift cards. The move is a direct shot at physical card tampering, offering consumers a secure alternative that does not sacrifice the personal touch of gift-giving.

The underlying problem with physical cards is their vulnerability. Scammers frequently visit retail stores, slip gift cards off the racks, and use handheld scanners to copy the barcodes and PINs. They then apply a fresh scratch-off strip over the code and put the card back on the peg. Once an unsuspecting customer buys and activates the card, software automatically alerts the scammers, who drain the funds instantly. It is a low-tech scam with devastatingly high-tech execution.

PayPal’s new system bypasses physical retail racks entirely. Because the transaction happens within secure, encrypted digital channels, there is no physical barcode for a thief to clone. The recipient receives a secure notification via email or through their PayPal app. Opening it reveals the personalized video and instantly deposits the funds into their digital wallet.

How the AI Video Feature Works

Digital gift cards have historically felt cold. They often lack the emotion of a physical card with a handwritten note. PayPal wants to change that perception using generative artificial intelligence.

The process is simple. When sending a digital gift card, users can generate a customized video. Senders type in a brief prompt, perhaps mentioning an inside joke, a shared memory, or a specific holiday theme. The AI then creates a short, personalized video message to accompany the funds.

Users can select from various artistic styles, ranging from cozy winter scenes to vibrant, modern animations. The AI processes the sender’s written message to tailor the visual elements. For example, if you write, “Hope you use this for your upcoming trip to Tokyo,” the AI might weave subtle cherry blossom animations or a stylized skyline into the background of the video clip.

Bridging the Gap Between Security and Warmth

“We wanted to bridge the gap between security and emotion,” says Michelle Gill, a senior product lead at PayPal. “People love the convenience of digital gifts, but they miss the warmth of a real present. At the same time, we have to protect consumers from increasingly sophisticated retail fraud.”

The scale of that fraud is staggering. According to recent data from the Federal Trade Commission, consumers lose hundreds of millions of dollars each year to gift card scams. It has become one of the top payment methods demanded by fraudsters, and tampering at physical retail locations has spiked dramatically over the past two years.

To make sure the new feature is safe for everyone, PayPal has integrated strict content filters. These guardrails prevent the AI from generating inappropriate, offensive, or unsafe video content, ensuring the tool remains family-friendly.

Will Shoppers Make the Switch?

Retail analysts believe this move could reshape how we think about holiday giving. The convenience of grabbing a plastic card while buying groceries is hard to beat, but the rising fear of fraud is changing consumer behavior.

“The physical gift card mall at the front of the grocery store is in trouble,” says Marcus Thorne, a retail technology analyst at Juniper Research. “Consumers are getting smarter. They are tired of the anxiety of wondering if the card they just bought is empty. Digital-first solutions that actually feel personal are the logical next step.”

A major hurdle will be adoption among less tech-savvy shoppers. To address this, PayPal has simplified its mobile interface specifically for this rollout. The company claims that anyone can create, customize, and send an AI video gift card in under two minutes.

As the holiday season approaches, the battle against retail fraud is moving rapidly online. PayPal is betting that artificial intelligence can keep our wallets safe while making digital gift-giving feel a little more human.
